Wellton is located around 30 miles east of Yuma. The Wellton Justice Court is one of three limited jurisdiction courts in Yuma County that handles misdemeanor cases, including those for assault and battery, DUI, solicitation and shoplifting. The court only takes misdemeanor cases that are punishable by fines less than $2,500 and/or less than 6 months imprisonment in county jail. It is also possible for the court to issue warrants and to hold preliminary hearings for felony charges, although it is left to the discretion of the Justice of the Peace. During the preliminary hearing, if your Yuma criminal defense lawyer presents a strong argument on your behalf that there is not enough evidence for your case to proceed, the judge has the authority to dismiss the charges against you. Felony crimes are otherwise tried in the Superior Court, which has general jurisdiction. If you were charged with a drug crime in either court, your case may be relegated to the Yuma County drug court. The Wellton Justice Court is located at 10620 Dome Street, Wellton, AZ 85356.
